Authentic Design Alliance Launch

23 June, 2010

On the 17th of June, a large group of industry professionals came together to support the Authentic Design Alliance and to learn more about the value of protecting original design work. A panel of industry experts, led by Indesign editor Paul McGillick, discussed the topic and examined every facet of the issue of copies from product design through to interior design.

As journalist Lisa Pryor asked in her 2009 article for the Sydney Morning Herald; "Isn't there some kind of law against copying someone else's design then flogging it for profit?" Unfortunately in Australia, the answer is a resounding no.

The Authentic Design Alliance was formed to try and change this and to encourage everyone to really think before purchasing or specifying a cheap copy. First ask yourself:

  • Who is making them?
  • What are the conditions they work under ?
  • Why are the knock-offs so much cheaper than the originals?
  • What was eliminated from the manufacturing process in order to keep the price so low? Environmental considerations? Ethical working conditions? Integral design features? The quality of the materials used?

The next ADA event will be held in Melbourne in August. Stay tuned for more details.
